چکیده

We present results obtained using the new version of the multi-filter rotating shadowband radiometer (MFRSR) data analysis algorithm (Alexandrov et al. 2005). This algorithm allows the partition of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) into fine and coarse aerosol modes and to retrieve the fine mode effective radius (reff). A bimodal gamma distribution is used as the aerosol particle size model. The algorithm has been used for analysis of a multi-year dataset from the local MFRSR network at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Climate Research Facility (ACRF) Southern Great Plains (SGP) site. The retrieved aerosol parameters are compared with the corresponding AERONET almucantar retrieval results derived from a CIMEL sunphotometer collocated with the MFRSR at the SGP Central Facility. A constrained variant of the algorithm (zero NO2 column values) has been used to define the range of physically justified values of the fine mode effective radius, and for comparison with AERONET particle size retrievals.

Automated Algorithm for MFRSR Data Analysis

We present a substantial upgrade of our previously developed multi-filter rotating shadowband (MFRSR) data analysis algorithm (Alexandrov et al. 2002). For the new version an automated cloud screening procedure (Alexandrov et al. 2004) has been designed and a bimodal aerosol particle size distribution model is used defined by a variable fine mode size and a ratio between the fine and coarse modes.

Retrievals of cloud optical depth and effective radius from Thin-Cloud Rotating Shadowband Radiometer measurements

[1] A Thin-Cloud Rotating Shadowband Radiometer (TCRSR) was developed and deployed in a field test at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Climate Research Facility’s Southern Great Plains site. The TCRSR measures the forward-scattering lobe of the direct solar beam (i.e., the solar aureole) through an optically thin cloud (optical depth < 8). We applied the retrieval algorithm of Min and Duan...

Comparison of Algorithms in the Processing of a MFRSR Network

In this paper, we explore the performance of a novel NASA-GISS algorithm which is used to calibrate and extract aerosol optical depth (AOD) from a portable Multi-filter Shadowband radiometer (MFRSR) instrument in comparison to the standard Langley regression algorithm. We show that the NASA-GISS algorithm results has stable calibration coefficients in comparison to those obtained using the conv...

Columnar water vapor retrievals from multifilter rotating shadowband radiometer data

[1] The multifilter rotating shadowband radiometer (MFRSR) measures direct and diffuse irradiances in the visible and near-infrared spectral range. In addition to characteristics of atmospheric aerosols, MFRSR data also allow retrieval of precipitable water vapor (PWV) column amounts, which are determined from the direct normal irradiances in the 940-nm spectral channel. The HITRAN 2004 spectra...
